Review by Rennie Cowan.
I'm a horror film fan. Always liked them, always will. I even played the first few Resident Evil PlayStation games and bought the strategy guides to fill the void for clues. This film is not a classic, but it keeps you engaged and not a bad performance by Brad Pitt either. It starts out with speed, so you won't be bored waiting for the movie to begin. The good thing is this film is not convoluted while pleasing the former literature it spurned from (the original book), so it takes off on its own without regards to the novel. Overall: World War Z ... great FX. Great digital zombies, BUT just too many zombies. Now for the criticism.
You just can't beat the personality of the classic films like Dawn of the Dead, or even earlier than that; when it comes to zombies, you got to know your zombies. Some of them have their own unique personalities. With this film, the zombies were like a swarm of flies, buzzing around and there was so much going on with these zombies; it was like watching Hitchcock's The Birds. Different, in all respects. And originality is a good thing. But slow down ... these zombies move way too fast for my liking; I say, either have them drag their feet or make them run after you! Hmm, and I'm wondering if they still like eating brains. In films like Dawn of the Dead each zombie had a unique personality, and those films paid more attention to the condition of the zombie; the reflection of the former human self. If you were a shopping mall groupie before you became a zombie, more than likely, you'd end up at the mall, in your favorite clothing department store and walking around in your new zombie-hood.
World War Z, not bad. I love the Israel location the most; again, original location for the zombies, and seeing the zombies there was quite religious. And boy, as if the Middle East didn't have enough problems! I'd recommend this film to any mindless movie fan who just wants to chill and not wish they had ever put that Blu-Ray into the machine. The zombies didn't scare me though; I could tell they were digital. Today, everything is digital so it all looks cartoony. But again, I highly recommend for a fun Saturday night movie.
Rating: 6.7 out of 10. Word description: Fun!
